The Descendants are a group of supernatural beings that appear in the 2007 video game Uncharted: Drake's Fortune.

In the game, they are former men who have been infected by a virus contained in the statue of El Dorado and have tasked themselves with protecting the treasure; attacking anyone who comes near it.

[edit] Background

The Descendants were once people. However, they were infected by a virus carried within El Dorado - not a lost city of gold as widely believed, but rather a golden sarcophagus. Inbreeding between those who were infected would eventually lead to the completely-mutated creatures seen in Uncharted: Drake's Fortune.[1] Over the years, numerous groups fell to the virus, namely a group of Spanish explorers who were competiting with legendary explorer Sir Francis Drake to find El Dorado, and the crew of a German U-Boat that got stranded in the Amazon rainforest.[2]

The Descendants would prove to be uncivilised and aggressive, attacking anyone who got close to the statue of El Dorado. However, they were intelligent enough to build traps hidden in the jungle of the island that contained El Dorado.[2]

[edit] Uncharted: Drake's Fortune

In July 2006,[3] treasure-hunter Gabriel Roman sets up a base of operations in the catacombs below the island holding El Dorado in order to the treasure. In these catacombs, explorer Nathan "Nate" Drake and his companion, journalist Elena Fisher, come across Nate's old friend Eddy Raja, whose band of pirates has been decimated by the Descendants. As Elena climbs to safety, a wave of Descendants swarms the catacombs, killing Eddy's last pirate. Nate and Eddy manage to fend the Descendants off for some time, but at the last minute one of the creatures grabs Eddy and pulls him into the depths of the catacombs.[2]

Nate and Elena manage to escape the catacombs, but Nate later encounters them in an abandoned German underground bunker, where he finds more information about the creatures. Furthermore, the Descendants can also been seen when Gabriel Roman finds the statue of El Dorado, as Roman's right-hand man Atoq Navarro persuades Roman to open the sarcophagus, and when Roman does it, the virus escapes and begins mutating Roman. However, before the transformation is complete Navarro shoots and kills Roman. Numerous Descendants then swarm the area, attacking Navarro's team of mercenaries. Ultimately, the Descendants remain on the island, but the statue of El Dorado is pushed into the sea by Nate after his final showdown with Navarro.[2]
