[edit] Biography

Karl Schäfer is a former Nazi, as he was once a member of the Ahnenerbe, a child agency of the SS organisation in Nazi Germany. In 1939, Schäfer leads an Ahnenerbe expedition to the Himalayan Mountains in search of the lost city of Shambhala and the wish-fulfilling Cintamani Stone said to be there. However, as the expedition progresses, Schäfer realises how powerful the Cintamani Stone actually is, and kills the members of the expedition. Following this, Schäfer takes refuge in a nearby Tibetan village, where he resides with the Tibetan villagers for the next 70 years of his life.[1]

In November 2008, a wounded Nathan "Nate" Drake is brought to the Tibetan village by one of its inhabitants, Tenzin. As Nate is nursed back to health in Tenzin's hut, Schäfer takes the Phurba dagger from him; when Nate's companion Elena Fisher later arrives in the village, Schäfer explains that the Phurba is the key to Shambhala.[1]

Several days later Nate wakes up, and Tenzin brings him to Schäfer's hut, where Schäfer tells the same thing he told Elena: the Phurba is what is needed to enter Shambhala. Schäfer tells Nate of his expedition to find Shambhala and the Cintamani Stone 70 years ago, but Nate is uninterested in continuing his adventure to find Shambhala and the Stone. Eventually, Schäfer is able to motivate Nate by explaining how powerful Nate's adversary - Serbian war criminal Zoran Lazarević - will become if he is able to locate Shambhala and possess the Cintamani Stone. Schäfer tells Nate that the true power of the Stone will become apparent if Nate finds the remains of Schäfer's expedition; Nate obliges, as he makes his way into the Himalayan Mountains with Tenzin.[1]

Shortly after Nate and Tenzin head into the Himalayas, the Tibetan village comes under attack from Lazarević and his soldiers. While the villagers repel the invaders, Schäfer takes refuge with Tenzin's daughter Pema. Nate and Tenzin arrive back at the village and are able to aid the villagers in defeating Lazarević's forces, but Schäfer is still abducted by Lazarević and taken in a convoy to the monastery where the entrance of Shambhala is said to be.[1]

At the monastery, Schäfer receives rough treatment from Lazarević and his soldiers, before he is locked in a tower. When Nate and Elena later arrive at the monastery and meet up with Schäfer, he asks Nate if he understands why he killed the members of his expedition. Nate says yes, and Schäfer dies after telling Nate he must stop Lazarević. Elena wants to take Schäfer's body, but Nate says it is infeasible and instead takes the gold medallion from around his neck.[1]

Later, after Nate enters Shambhala and defeats Lazarević, Tenzin gives Schäfer a traditional Tibetan funeral in the village. Nate pays his final respects to Schäfer and places Schäfer's medallion in front of his grave, before Elena says Schäfer would've approved of Nate's actions.[1]

[edit] Behind the scenes

Karl Schäfer first appears in the 2009 video game Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, and later returns in the 2011 video game Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception. In all of his appearances, Schäfer is voiced by René Auberjonois,[2][3] an American actor who is perhaps best known for his roles in science-fiction television series Trek: Deep Space Nine and crime drama Boston Legal.[4] Schäfer's appearance in Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception is non-canonical, as he only appears in the multiplayer component of the game when purchased as part of Classic Skins Pack 2, a set of downloadable content released for the game.[5][6] When purchased, Schäfer is available for use as a Hero skin, with the following customisation options: Tibetan Robe (torso) and Tibetan Pants (legs)
