List of characters in Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

The second game in the Uncharted series, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, features a number of diverse characters. Several of these characters return from Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, the first instalment in the Uncharted series. However, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves also introduces a number of new characters. These characters each have their own story to tell, and the developers of the Uncharted series, Naughty Dog, included such a diverse range of characters in order to not only make the story of Uncharted 2: Among Thieves character-driven,[1] but also to shed more light on the personality and character of leading protagonist, Nathan "Nate" Drake.[2] Found on this page is a list of characters in Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

[edit] Nathan Drake

Main Article: Nathan Drake

Nathan "Nate" Drake returns from Uncharted: Drake's Fortune as the main character and primary protagonist of Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. Voiced by Nolan North,[3] Nate is an American treasure-hunter said to be a descendant of the legendary explorer Sir Francis Drake. In Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, Nate is approached by previous acquaintances Harry Flynn and Chloe Frazer to pull off a heist at a Turkish museum. The heist begins well, but as Nate and Flynn retrieve the artefact specified by Flynn's client, Flynn turns on Nate and leaves him to be arrested by the Turkish authorities. After spending some time incarcerated in a Turkish prison, Nate is bailed by Victor "Sully" Sullivan, returning from Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, and Chloe. After being bailed, the trio agree to unite in an effort to beat Flynn and his client, now revealed to be Serbian war criminal Zoran Lazarević, to their goal: the remains of Marco Polo's Lost Fleet, which is said to hold clues to the location of the mythical lost city of Shambhala, said to be the home of the wish-fulfilling Cintamani Stone.

Nate's character was developed to be an ordinary male,[4] and this was one aspect of the character praised in reviews for Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. The Telegraph said Nate was a "terrific lead", and called Nate "handsome" and "roughish".[5] Furthermore, the same review would go on to praise Nate for being one of the most "likeable video game characters" of his generation.[5] This particular sentiment about likeability would later be echoed by gaming website Electric Pig.[6]

[edit] Elena Fisher

Main Article: Elena Fisher

Elena Fisher also returns from Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, having noticeably matured and developed between the two games.[7] Voiced by Emily Rose,[3] Elena is an American journalist and cable television presenter on the trail of the ruthless war criminal Zoran Lazarević. Along with her cameraman Jeff, Elena encounters Nathan "Nate" Drake and his companion Chloe Frazer while in Nepal, and the four of them agree to cooperate due to their mutual goal of finding Lazarević. When Jeff is executed in cold blood by Lazarević and Chloe is forced to leave with Lazarević and Harry Flynn in order to protect her role as a double-agent, Elena plays the part of Nate's main partner for a portion of the game.

Elena was developed for Uncharted: Drake's Fortune to act as a love interest and a sidekick to Nate, and this carries over to Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. The character of Elena was largely praised for her role in Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, with special praise reserved for the love triangle between her, Nate and Chloe, which The Telegraph cited as one of the best romances in the genre.[5]

[edit] Chloe Frazer

Main Article: Chloe Frazer

Chloe Frazer makes her debut in the Uncharted series. Voiced by Claudia Black,[3] Chloe is a reckless Australian explorer previously acquainted with Nathan "Nate" Drake.[8] After previously helping Nate on his and Harry Flynn's infiltration of a Turkish museum, Chloe later returns to help Nate by serving as a double-agent; integrating herself into Zoran Lazarević's camp while still secretly helping out Nate and his associate Victor "Sully" Sullivan in their early search for Marco Polo's Lost Fleet. When Sully later decides that this particular adventure is too dangerous for him, Chloe takes over the role as Nate's main partner for a large portion of the game.

Chloe was introduced as a character that is supposed to represent Nate's darker past, and also provide a confident character that can challenge Nate. Furthermore, Chloe's impulsiveness and "bad girl" persona is an intentional contrast of the traditionally "good girl" manner of Elena.[9] The character of Chloe received significant praise in reviews for Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, being called "smart", "confident" and "an interesting, fun character".[10]

[edit] Victor Sullivan

Main Article: Victor Sullivan

Victor "Sully" Sullivan makes his second appearance in the Uncharted series, returning from Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. Voiced by Richard McGonagle,[3] Sully is an American treasure-hunter and antique-dealer who accompanies Nate for the early stages of Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. Sully plays a significantly smaller role in the game than the role he plays in Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, as he finds the events in Uncharted 2: Among Thieves too dangerous, saying he is getting too old for these kind of adventures. Therefore, he leaves after a series of harrowing events in Borneo and allows Nathan "Nate" Drake and Chloe Frazer to continue their search for Shambhala and the Cintamani Stone alone.

Sully was originally conceived for Uncharted: Drake's Fortune as a mentor and father-figure to Nathan "Nate" Drake,[11] and this carries over to Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. Due to his small appearance in the game, Sully went largely unmentioned in reviews for Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. However, an editorial on IGN would mention the voice acting of Richard McGonagle and Nolan North (voice of Nate), saying that the chemistry between the actors was so good that audiences would be led to believe the two characters actually have a history of adventures together.[1]

[edit] Antagonists

[edit] Zoran Lazarević

Main Article: Zoran Lazarević

Zoran Lazarević make his first appearance in the Uncharted series as the main antagonist of Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. Voiced by Graham McTavish,[3] Lazarević is a ruthless Serbian war criminal who is also searching for the mythical Cintamani Stone, said to be housed in the fabled land of Shambhala. Lazarević hires explorer Harry Flynn to find an ancient lamp belonging to Marco Polo that is said to contain clues to the location of Polo's Lost Fleet. In turn, the remains of the Lost Fleet contain clues to the location of Shambhala. Working with Flynn, Lazarević and his private army make their way through Borneo, Nepal and Tibet, constantly battling treasure-hunter Nathan "Nate" Drake and his allies.

A favourite character of several members of the Naughty Dog team,[12] Lazarević was chosen to be Serbian due to the archetype surrounding Eastern European villains.[13] Reception to the character of Lazarević was generally positive, with a review of Uncharted 2: Among Thieves in The Telegraph calling him "a suitably nasty piece of work".[5]

[edit] Harry Flynn

Main Article: Harry Flynn

Harry Flynn makes his debut in the Uncharted series. Voiced by Steve Valentine,[3] Flynn acts as the game's secondary antagonist. A former acquaintance of Nathan "Nate" Drake, Flynn approaches Nate prior to the game to pull off a heist in a Turkish museum. The heist goes well, and Flynn and Nate retrieve the artefact requested by Flynn's client. However, as the two go to leave the museum, Flynn turns on Nate and leaves him at the mercy of the Turkish authorities. Following this, Flynn and his client, now revealed to be Serbian war criminal Zoran Lazarević, begin to track Marco Polo's Lost Fleet, said to hold clues to the location of the mythical lost city of Shambhala. When Nate is later released from prison, he comes after Flynn and Lazarević, leading to a race between the two parties from Borneo to the Himalayan Mountains in Tibet, where the lost city of Shambhala is said to be.

Harry Flynn was supposed to represent a more darker side of Nathan "Nate" Drake, and represent what Nate could have become if he had chosen a different, more criminal path.[9] The character of Flynn was initially not written to be British; his national identity came about organically after Steve Valentine - a British actor - was cast in the role.[13]

[edit] Zoran Lazarević's soldiers

Main Article: Zoran Lazarević's soldiers

Zoran Lazarević's soldiers make their first appearance in the Uncharted series. Acting as Nathan "Nate" Drake's most common foes throughout the game, they were hired by the Serbian war criminal in an effort to help him find the mythical Cintamani Stone, said to be housed in the fabled lost city of Shambhala. Led by Lieutenant Draza, these soldiers were also tasked with battling Nate and his allies. The army would sustain heavy losses at the hands of Nate and his allies, and these losses would intensify when Lazarević's forces approached Shambhala and were attacked by the lost city's Guardians.

Towards the end of the game, Lazarević alludes to his private army having hundreds of soldiers. Six of these would be named and given any sort of identity. These were: Dragan, Lovac, Sark, Tetram, Vodnik and Zorskel. These six soldiers would also be available in Uncharted 2: Among Thieves multiplayer as selectable villain skins.

[edit] Guardians

Main Article: Guardian

The Guardians also appear for the first time in the Uncharted series. Voiced by Steve Blum[14] and Fred Tatasciore,[15] these Guardians are mutated humans who previously consumed the resin of the Cintamani Stone. Following this, the Guardians took it upon themselves to protect Shambhala, the home of the Cintamani Stone. The Guardians prove to be an aggressive species, attacking both Nathan "Nate" Drake's allies and Zoran Lazarević's forces when the two parties approach the entrance to the fabled lost city of Shambhala.

[edit] Minor characters

[edit] Jeff

Main Article: Jeff

Jeff is a character new to the Uncharted series. Voiced by Gregory Myhre,[3] Jeff is journalist Elena Fisher's cameraman. The two are searching for Serbian war criminal Zoran Lazarević in a war-torn city in Nepal when they encounter treasure-hunter Nathan "Nate" Drake and his companion Chloe Frazer, who are also searching for Lazarević. With this common goal, the four decide unite for their time in Nepal.

[edit] Tenzin

Main Article: Tenzin

Tenzin makes his first appearance in the Uncharted series. Voiced by Pema Dhondup and with his motion-capture work being provided by Robin Atkin Downes,[3] Tenzin is a Tibetan mountaineer who guides main character Nathan "Nate" Drake through the mountains in search of the remains of a previous expedition to find Shambhala, which was led by former Nazi Karl Schäfer. After discovering these remains, Tenzin and Nate return to the former's village to find it under attack from Zoran Lazarević's soldiers. The two must unite with the other Tibetan villagers and make their way through the forces attacking the village in an attempt to find Schäfer and Tenzin's daughter Pema.

The character of Tenzin was conceived when developer Naughty Dog wondered how Nathan "Nate" Drake would respond if he was forced into trusting someone who didn't speak the same language as him. Furthermore, the idea behind spending time with Tenzin in the mountains and then seeing Tenzin's village under attack was intended to generate an emotional response within the player.[2]

[edit] Karl Schäfer

Main Article: Karl Schäfer

Karl Schäfer makes his debut in the Uncharted series. Voiced by René Auberjonois,[3] Schäfer is a former Nazi who previously led an expedition to find the fabled lost city of Shambhala. Schäfer's expedition came close to finding Shambhala and the Cintamani Stone said to be there, but then Schäfer found out the terrible true power behind the stone and killed the rest of his expedition in order to protect them from this evil. Schäfer sends treasure-hunter Nathan "Nate" Drake to find the remains of this expedition in order to realise how important it is that Nate stop Serbian war criminal Zoran Lazarević from coming into contact with the stone.
