[edit] Background

In October, the private security firms that the squad members work for are hired by Phoenix Innovations, a weapons manufacturing company. The squad are needed because the CEO of Phoenix Innovations Tyr Henriksen, along with one of his employees Olivia Hzujak, are venturing into a labyrinth beneath Nanjing, China that is known as "Diyu"; Hell in Chinese mythology.[1]

The squad of mercenaries advance into the labyrinth along with Henriksen, Olivia, Olivia's stepdaughter Jadranka or "Jada", treasure-hunter Nathan "Nate" Drake and Henriksen's bodyguard Corelli. There is a lot of tension within the entourage and it soon becomes apparent as Olivia turns on Henriksen, revealing that the mercenaries and Corelli are working for her. The mercenaries are ordered to kill Nate, Jada and Henriksen, but Nate is able to kill Corelli by kicking him off a cliff into the raging ravine below. Before the mercenaries are able to respond, the whole group comes under attack from the Protectors of the Hidden Word, an enduring society set up to protect the secrets of the labyrinth.[1]

The mercenaries are equipped with a large cache of weapons, which gives them the upper-hand against the Protectors. However, the secret society is still able to kill Perkins and a number of other mercenaries. Former soldier Massarsky takes over for a brief period of time, as he and the last remaining mercenaries Garza and Suarez battle the deformed man known as the "Minotaur".[1]

The Minotaur kills both Massarsky and Garza, leaving just Suarez and Olivia to continue on and catch up with Nate, Jada and Henriksen, who are battling the final Protectors and the Mistress of the Labyrinth. Suarez is able to aid in defeating the final Protectors and escapes with Nate, Jada and Victor "Sully" Sullivan following the deaths of both Henriksen and Olivia. However, the wounds suffered by Suarez in the labyrinth are enough to kill the mercenary after escaping.[1]

With the death of Suarez, the only two mercenaries that remain are the ones left outside the labyrinth on sentry duty. The ultimate fate of these mercenaries is unknown, although it can be assumed that they returned to continue their work for their private security firms.[1]
