Ramón Valdez is an Ecuadorian drug lord who runs his drug cartel from a compound in an area of Ecuadorian rainforest known as El Oriente. Valdez is in control of a private army of henchmen that guard the compound and give chase to those who have wronged him.
Three years before the events of Uncharted: The Fourth Labyrinth, Valdez hires treasure-hunter Nathan "Nate" Drake to lead a team into Pacariqtambo - the cave where the first people emerged into the world - and retrieve the golden staff that is said to belong to one of these people: the golden staff of Ayar Manco. When Nate returns with the staff, Valdez takes the artefact and attempts to kill him, although the treasure-hunter is able to escape from Valdez and leave the country.
 Uncharted: The Fourth Labyrinth
Valdez has been involved in a political battle with the mayor of Guayaquil for some time, and as part of this ongoing battle, Valdez kidnaps the mayor's daughter, Alex Munoz. In the October that follows the kidnapping, Valdez's compound is infiltrated by Nate, who has been hired by the local Cuiqawa tribe to retrieve the staff of Ayar Manco, as they believe the artefact to rightfully belong to them.
Nate retrieves the staff and rescues Alex, and Valdez sends his henchmen after Nate and Alex attempt a getaway in a stolen jeep belonging to Valdez. Valdez's men chase Nate and Alex through the jungle for some time, and it seems as though Valdez's men are successful as Nate drives himself and Alex into a dead-end. However, just as Nate and Alex declare their surrender, the Cuiqawa tribe appear from the surrounding forestry and ambush Valdez's henchmen with an assortment of ancient and modern weapons.
All of Valdez's men are killed in the ambush; Nate is able to return the staff of Ayar Manco to the Cuiqawa tribe and return Alex to her father, receiving large monetary rewards for each of these deeds, while Valdez is left without the artefact or his hostage.
