[edit] Background

The notion of a pure land known as Shambhala is one that has its roots in Buddhist tradition. A common understanding is that Shambhala is a land of peace and tranquillity. Furthermore, it has been suggested that Shambhala is the location of the fabled Cintamani Stone, a wish-fulfilling jewel.[1]

Despite the suggestion that Shambhala is supposed to be a metaphorical spiritual location within oneself, there is a common belief that there is indeed a physical land of Shambhala - with the most common location for it being hypothesised as Tibet, in the Himalayan Mountains.[1]

[edit] Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

In November 2009, treasure-hunter Nathan "Nate" Drake is the first one on the trail of the lost city, as he and his companions Victor "Sully" Sullivan and Chloe Frazer discover that Marco Polo had information on Shambhala, said to be the home of the legendary Cintamani Stone, a wish-fulfilling jewel of immeasurable wealth.[2][3]

Also searching for Shambhala is Serbian war criminal Zoran Lazarević, who not only has Harry Flynn, a former associate of Nate, at his disposal, but also an entire army. The search for Shambhala leads the two parties from Borneo to a war-torn city in Nepal, and then finally onto a monastery in Tibet, high up in the Himalayan Mountains.[3]

After locating the entrance to Shambhala and advancing into the lost city, an entourage comprising of both Nate and Lazarević's forces comes under attack from the Guardians of Shambhala; former men who have been turned into huge beasts by the Cintamani Stone. Later, the final showdown between Nate and Lazarević will ignite the flammable Cintamani Stone - which is actually resin amber embedded in the Tree of Life - causing Shambhala to start crumbling.[3]

[edit] Behind the scenes

The setting of Shambhala seen in Uncharted 2: Among Thieves seems to be the inspiration for the Uncharted 2: Among Thieves multiplayer map The Lost City.
