[edit] Biography

Little is known about the Tibetan mountaineer Tenzin. He has a daughter named Pema, although Pema's mother is never seen. Tenzin is also good friends with former Nazi Karl Schäfer before Schäfer's death. Tenzin is shown to be a skilled mountaineer and fighter who is also capable of handling guns.[1]

[edit] Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

In November 2008, Tenzin rescues an unconscious Nathan "Nate" Drake from the flaming wreck of a train that belongs to Serbian war criminal Zoran Lazarević. Tenzin helps nurse Nate back to health, and when Nate regains consciousness, Tenzin escorts him through his village to the hut of the former Nazi Karl Schäfer. Here Schäfer sets Nate a challenge to find his lost Nazi expedition to find Shambhala in the Himalayan Mountains. As Nate ventures into the mountains, Tenzin acts as Nate's guide.[1]

In the Himalayas, Tenzin and Nate are attacked by a Guardian of Shambhala disguised as a yeti, although they are able to fight it off. After Tenzin and Nate find the remains of Schäfer's expedition they are set upon by more Guardians, but they are able to escape from the beasts.[1]

When Tenzin and Nate arrive back at Tenzin's village, they find it under attack by Lazarević's army. Tenzin and Nate unite with the Tibetan villagers to fight Lazarević's forces off, and Tenzin also assists Nate in destroying a tank controlled by Lazarević's soldiers. However, they are not able to stop Lazarević from kidnapping Schäfer. Tenzin and Nate then regroup with Nate's companion, journalist Elena Fisher, who was watching over Tenzin's daughter Pema as Lazarević's forces laid siege to the village. Nate and Elena make the decision to go after Lazarević in an attempt to save Schäfer, leaving Tenzin with Pema.[1]

Tenzin also returns in the final cutscene of the game, as he gives the now-deceased Schäfer a Tibetan funeral.[1]

[edit] Behind the scenes

Tenzin first appears in the 2009 video game Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, later returning in the 2011 video game Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception. Tenzin is voiced by Tibetan actor and filmmaker Pema Dhondup, while English actor Robin Atkin Downes provides Tenzin's motion capture work.[2] Downes also voices Atoq Navarro, Talbot and Zoran Lazarević's soldiers in the Uncharted series.[3] In multiplayer component of Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, Tenzin is available for free as a default Hero skin.[4], while in the multiplayer component of Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception, Tenzin is available for use as a Hero skin when purchased from the PlayStation Store, either individually or as part of Classic Skins Pack 2.[5][6] In Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception multiplayer, Tenzin's default attire is: Torn Tibetan Jacket (torso) and Patched Pants (legs). The character of Tenzin was conceived when the developers of the Uncharted series, Naughty Dog, wondered how leading protagonist Nathan "Nate" Drake would react if he were confronted with a situation where he had to trust a character who didn't speak the same language as him.[7] Furthermore, the idea behind spending time with Tenzin in the Himalayan Mountains during the game and then returning to Tenzin's village to find it under attack from Zoran Lazarević's private army was supposed to provoke an emotional response from the player.[8]
