The Heart of the Vault is the seventeenth chapter of Uncharted: Drake's Fortune.

[edit] Summary

After navigating their way past the large maze structure and the last of Eddy Raja's pirates in the previous chapter, Nathan "Nate" Drake and Elena Fisher have made their way deep into the treasure vault, where they believe the statue of El Dorado, or at least a clue to the whereabouts of the statue, to be. However, when they get there, they find no sign of the statue, but the decaying remains of Sir Francis Drake. As it is apparent to Nate that his ancestor never found the statue, he pulls off the ring he inherited from Drake and he and Elena begin to leave.

To leave, however, Nate must boost Elena up so she can retrieve a ladder and lower it for Nate. Although, before Elena gets a chance to lower the ladder, Eddy and his last surviving pirate, Prakoso, back into the room, apparently fearful of something. As Nate questions what they are fearful of, a number of Descendants, monsters who have been stalking Nate on the island, swarm the room and Prakoso is pulled into the chasm below the room by them. Nate and Eddy manage to hold off the remaining Descendants for a short period of time, but Eddy is soon pulled into the chasm by one of the monsters. Although Nate makes an attempt to save Eddy by shooting the Descendant, a second appears and pulls Eddy down. Nate must then fight off the horde on his own until Elena can lower a rope for him.

After Nate has been pulled up, he and Elena must then run away from another wave of the monsters, and after escaping, they find themselves in a German bunker, like the U-Boat found in the chapter A Surprising Find, an indication of the Nazis' expedition to find El Dorado some years ago.
