[edit] Synopsis

After stumbling through the Rub' al Khali desert for some time, treasure-hunter Nathan "Nate" Drake comes across a seemingly-abandoned desert village. The large gate that allows entry to the desert village is impassable, but Nate is still able to climb over the stone walls that surround the village and enter it. Inside the desert village Nate finds a well, although he finds that the small puddle of water remaining at the bottom of it is undrinkable. After climbing out the well, Nate finds that a number of Katherine Marlowe's agents are inside the desert village. Nate engages the agents in a gunfight, and after disposing of a number of them, is briefly trapped in a pit.[1]

After making his way out of the pit, Nate defeats a number of agents along a pathway, before coming to a large area featuring many agents and two jeeps. After defeating the agents and jeeps Nate continues on through the village, only to come to an area where he is pinned down by a large group of agents. Nate says that there is too many of them for him to defeat, before a tribe of Bedouin riders ride in on horseback, defeating the agents and saving Nate. As the Bedouin leave the village, the rider that is sharing his horse with Nate is killed, and Nate must command the horse, using an RPG-7 to destroy the settlement's gate as the Bedouin leave.[1]

That night, Nate speaks with the Sheikh of the Bedouin riders, Salim. Salim asks Nate why Marlowe is crossing the Rub' al Khali, and becomes worried when Nate replies that she is searching for the lost city Iram of the Pillars. Salim explains that Marlowe cannot be allowed to reach Iram, as it is a place of evil, before agreeing to help Nate attack Marlowe's caravan at dawn the next day.[1]

[edit] Behind the scenes

The Settlement is the nineteenth chapter of Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception, sharing its name with a track on the official soundtrack of the game.[3]. The desert village featured in this chapter is the basis for Desert Village, a map in the multiplayer component of Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception. The Settlement was one of the first chapters revealed as being in Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception, as it was revealed in a gameplay walkthrough shown at the 2011 Eurogamer Expo. At the Expo, a commentary of the gameplay walkthrough revealed how visual effects artists visited a set of sand dunes close to Los Angeles, California and shot footage that resulted in the enormous sand dunes that are seen in The Settlement.[4] Several weeks after the Eurogamer Expo, IGN ran a feature on Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception and its cinematic quality, using the visual effects shown in The Settlement as an example.[5]
