[edit] Development

According to sources, the film rights to the 2007 action-adventure video game Uncharted: Drake's Fortune were first optioned in May 2008 to Atlas Entertainment. [1] However, it would be June 2009 before any official announcement was made regarding the project. In June 2009, it was announced that a film based on Uncharted: Drake's Fortune was in development courtesy of Columbia Pictures, with Kyle Ward and Avi Arad attached to the project as head writer and producer, respectively.[2] It was later reported that Ward had dropped out of the project, with the writing duo behind 2005 adventure film Sahara, Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer, replacing him.[3]

[edit] Pre-production

In May 2010, it was announced that Sony Pictures were meeting with David O. Russell, the director of drama film The Fighter, in regards to Russell directing the film.[4] Despite later reports that negotiations had broken down between Sony and Russell,[5] it was announced on October 8, 2010 that Russell was set to direct the film. At this time, it was also announced that Ari Arad, Alex Gartner and Charles Roven would be joining Avi Arad in producing the film.[6]

After David O. Russell was announced as the film's director, Russell declared his intention to introduce a family dynamic to the film in a similar manner to what Russell did with his 2010 motion picture The Fighter. Russell wished to reveal more about primary protagonist Nathan "Nate" Drake's family, as Russell was excited by the idea that Nate's family could be a force to reckoned with in the world of international antiques.[7] These comments proved controversial among fans of the Uncharted series, and it was later claimed by staff working on Naughty Dog's Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception video game that Russell had not said what was reported.[8]

It was announced in May 2011 that David O. Russell had dropped out of the Uncharted: Drake's Fortune film due to creative differences.[9] In July, it was announced that Neil Burger, director of action film Limitless, was the new director of the film.[10] Speaking about the project, Burger revealed that he will be disregarding Russell's work on the project and starting afresh, as he plans going back to the video game in terms of content for the film.[11]

[edit] Plot

Further information: Plot of the video game

Uncharted: Drake's Fortune follows American treasure-hunter Nathan "Nate" Drake, who is said to be a descendant of legendary English explorer Sir Francis Drake, as he searches for the fabled treasure of El Dorado.

[edit] Cast

  • Nathan "Nate" Drake is the primary protagonist of the Uncharted: Drake's Fortune video game, and is scheduled to be the primary protagonist of the film. Firefly actor Nathan Fillion was one of the first names attached to the role, as he started a campaign on social networking website Twitter to garner support for him to be cast as Nate.[12] However, when David O. Russell was announced as the film's director, he quashed any notion of Fillion being in the role.[13] During Russell's tenure in charge of the film, Mark Wahlberg became a strong contender for the role as Nate,[14] with some news outlets even reporting that Wahlberg had been cast in the role.[15] Wahlberg's involvement in the film apparently ended when Russell left the project.[9]
  • Elena Fisher is another protagonist in Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, serving as Nathan "Nate" Drake's sidekick and love interest for the adventure. While David O. Russell was set to direct the film, it was reported that Scarlett Johansson, Amy Adams and Eva Mendes were all being considered for the role of Elena.[16][17]

While David O. Russell was head of the project, there was also reports that Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci were attached to the project as members of Nathan "Nate" Drake's family.[14]

[edit] Release

When David O. Russell was announced as the film's director in May 2010, it was also said that the film was being pushed for a 2011 release.[4] However, with Russell being replaced by Neil Burger, the release date has been pushed back some time. The Internet Movie Database (IMDB) currently lists the release date for the film as 2013.[18]
