The Minotaur is a half-man, half-bull that in Greek mythology protects the labyrinth of Knossos on the island of Crete.

In Uncharted: The Fourth Labyrinth, the Minotaur remains - not as the mythical beast, but as an ordinary man transformed by a concoction containing the white hellebore flower. The Minotaur protects the series of labyrinths that were created by the legendary Greek craftsmen Daedalus.

[edit] Background

In Greek mythology, the Minotaur is a beast that is half-man, half-bull. The Minotaur is the offspring of Pasiphae, the wife of Minos, who was the king of Greek island of Crete, and a white bull sent down to Earth by Poseidon, the god of the sea. Minos was embarrassed by both his wife and the Minotaur, and ordered legendary craftsman Daedalus to create a labyrinth that would hold them. This was the labyrinth of Knossos, and the Minotaur served as the protector of this labyrinth.[1][2]

[edit] Uncharted: The Fourth Labyrinth

In Uncharted: The Fourth Labyrinth, it is revealed that the Minotaur is actually not the mythical beast, but rather an ordinary man transformed into a beast by a concoction containing the white hellebore flower. Furthermore, the Minotaur is not one man, rather it is the name given to the current beast and the most powerful member of the Protectors of the Hidden Word, a secret society set up to retain the mysteries held within Daedalus' four labyrinths.[3]

In October, treasure-hunter Nathan "Nate" Drake, Norwegian businessman Tyr Henriksen and Jadranka "Jada" Hzujak, the daughter of an archaeologist who had been studying labyrinths before his murder, advance into the labyrinth along with an unconscious Victor "Sully" Sullivan. The Minotaur attacks Henriksen, but before he is able to kill the businessman Olivia Hzujak, Jada's stepmother, arrives with the remains of her team of mercenaries. The Minotaur is able to kill two of the three mercenaries - Garza and de facto squad leader Massarsky - before he is killed by Olivia and the final remaining mercenary Suarez.[3]

However, when the entourage moves in the treasure vault - where the Mistress of the Labyrinth remains with the final Protectors - there is another Minotaur; an ageing, previous Minotaur. When Olivia gorges herself in the treasure contained in the vault, she sets off a trap that begins flooding the vault. While everyone else escapes (with the exception of Henriksen, who is killed by the Mistress), the ageing Minotaur drags Olivia under the water, killing her.[3]
