Uncharted: Eye of Indra is a motion comic produced by Naughty Dog as part of the Uncharted series.

The motion comic follows treasure-hunter Nathan "Nate" Drake after he is hired by crimelord Daniel Pinkerton to find the Eye of Indra artefact. During his search, Nate comes across Rika and Eddy Raja.

The motion comic was released throughout late 2009 in four episodes, using content cut from Uncharted 2: Among Thieves to act as a prequel to Uncharted: Drake's Fortune.

[edit] Development

Uncharted: Eye of Indra was first announced during a live chat with Naughty Dog staff on October 13, 2009. This live chat revealed that a motion comic that was a prequel to Uncharted: Drake's Fortune was in production, using a story that was initially planned for use in Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, but was ultimately cut. Furthermore, the chat also revealed that a new female character named Rika would be appearing in the motion comic.[1]

The motion comic was in development for a year before the first episode was released on October 22, 2009.[2] The second episode would be released on November 24, 2009,[3] with the two final episodes - episodes three and four - being released on December 4, 2009.[4]

Uncharted: Eye of Indra was written and directed by Neil Druckmann,[5] who had previously worked as a game designer on Uncharted: Drake's Fortune.[6]

Nate meets with Pinkerton.

[edit] Plot

In Jakarta, Indonesia in June 2006,[7] crimelord Daniel Pinkerton approaches treasure-hunter Nathan "Nate" Drake and hires him to find the Eye of Indra artefact. While Nate is in a bar trying to uncover clues as to the location of the artefact, he is approached by two thugs. Nate manages to defend himself against them, but when one of the thugs produces a gun, the female bar owner intervenes to help Nate. Introducing herself as Rika, she attempts to help Nate decipher information regarding the location of the Eye of Indra, and the two of them eventually spend the night together.[8]

The next morning Rika reveals she has told somebody else about the artefact, and after a band of pirates burst into the room, it is revealed that this person is Nate's old friend Eddy Raja, who is actually Rika's brother. Eddy is initially angry at Nate for his involvement with Rika, but warms to the idea of pulling off a heist when Nate reveals he knows where the artefact is. Unbeknownst to Pinkerton, the Eye of Indra is inside Pinkerton's safe, hidden within another one of the Treasures of Indra, the Path of Indra.[8]

Nate and Eddy in a gunfight.

To begin the heist, Nate and the Rajas blow up the cars outside of Pinkerton's mansion, before forcing their way into the mansion and engaging in a gunfight with Pinkerton's henchman. Nate and Eddy are able to gain access to Pinkerton's office, leaving Rika behind. However, the two of them are unable to crack open Pinkerton's safe and Pinkerton soon returns to capture both of them.[8]

After torturing Nate and Eddy for some time, Pinkerton reveals that he has also captured Rika. However, this proves to be part of a plan, as Rika disables one of Pinkerton's henchmen and uses Eddy's Golden Gun to shoot Pinkerton, before shooting him again to kill him. After leaving Pinkerton's estate, Nate and the Rajas regroup at the dock and celebrate their victory over the crime lord. However, Rika then produces a gun and takes the artefact for herself, leaving Nate and Eddy behind.[8]

Rika's betrayal.

Three days later, Nate is at a bar, drinking with old friend Victor "Sully" Sullivan and explaining the story to him. However, Nate says that he's not too upset about being double-crossed by Rika, revealing that he has scheduled a meeting with journalist Elena Fisher regarding the excavation of his ancestor Sir Francis Drake's coffin.[8]

[edit] Characters

  • Nathan "Nate" Drake appears as the motion comic's primary protagonist. Nate is a treasure-hunter and explorer who is hired by crimelord Daniel Pinkerton to find the Eye of Indra artefact for him. Nolan North reprises his role as Nate for Uncharted: Eye of Indra.[2][9]
  • Rika Raja makes her debut in the Uncharted series.[1] Voiced by Gwendoline Yeo,[9] Rika is Eddy Raja's sister. She engages in a short relationship with Nate and aids Nate and her brother Eddy as they plan to steal the Eye of Indra artefact from Daniel Pinkerton's mansion.
  • Eddy Raja returns from Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. However, in Uncharted: Eye of Indra, Eddy takes on a role as more of a protagonist, helping old acquaintance Nate and his sister Rika as they steal the Eye of Indra artefact from Daniel Pinkerton. James Sie returns to reprise his role as Eddy.[9]
  • Daniel Pinkerton, voiced by Fred Tatasciore,[9] makes his debut in the Uncharted series. An American crimelord living in Indonesia, Pinkerton is the comic's main antagonist and hires Nate to find the Eye of Indra artefact for him.

Antique-dealer Victor "Sully" Sullivan and journalist Elena Fisher, both main characters in the Uncharted series, make small appearances near the end of the motion comic. Richard McGonagle and Emily Rose returned to voice their respective characters.[9]

[edit] Reception

Reception to Uncharted: Eye of Indra was largely positive. The motion comic was described as a "great adventure" that would leave the viewer "completely enthralled."[10] The good reviews continued, with one reviewer saying that fans of the Uncharted series would be "pleasantly surprised" with Uncharted: Eye of Indra.[11]

Gaming blog EZ-Mode Unlocked gave the motion comic a largely positive review, calling it "fun" and a "good prequel piece". However, the same review would also criticise the motion comic's distorted timeline, saying it could distract viewers from the action and leave them confused.[12]

[edit] Legacy

The characters of Rika Raja and Daniel Pinkerton were introduced to the multiplayer component of Uncharted 2: Among Thieves as part of the Eye of Indra Bundle. The bundle was released to Europe on December 10, 2009,[13] and to North America on April 1, 2010.[14] Both Gwendoline Yeo and Fred Tatasciore return to provide additional voice work for their respective characters.[15]
